JOHN PEARN is the partner in charge of financial dispute resolution services at wbs. He is a chartered accountant with a wealth of experience in the full range of forensic assignments. After graduating from Bristol University he trained with the audit department of Coopers & Lybrand in the City. Upon qualifying he continued to undertake special assignments subsequently specialising in financial investigations of different types where the skills and judgment of an experienced auditor could be brought to bear. He worked in Australia and New Zealand before returning to Leeds in 1982. For the last twelve years he has concentrated on forensic accounting, carrying out assignments both in the UK and overseas. He has undertaken cases dealing for the claimants and defendants in personal injury actions and also complex consequential loss disputes, including a major assignment in Kuwait dealing with losses stemming from the Iraqi invasion. He has a specific interest in business and share valuations ranging from disputes concerning small parcels of shares in private companies and partnerships, through to business valuations of major companies. He is an acknowledged expert in share valuation techniques having made presentations to legal audiences such as the North East Bar Association and the Solicitors' Family Law Association as well as to other accountants. He has been appointed by the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales to determine, as Independent Expert, share valuation disputes. He has also undertaken numerous assignments as a Single Joint Expert, both by agreement between the parties and also by Court appointment. He has appeared as an expert accounting witness in the High Court, and in Arbitration proceedings. He is a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute and is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Independent Expert John Pearn has acted as an independent expert to determine financial disputes on many occasions. Such appointments have been by mutual agreement between the parties or by order of Court and from time to time by the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The manner in which such appointments are undertaken varies depending upon the case concerned but normally we closely follow the practice and principles established by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of which John Pearn is a Member.
